I Kept Ignoring the Numbness Until It Started Scaring Me
At first, it was easy to explain away. My foot would go numb now and then, or I would get that strange pins-and-needles feeling in my toes. I figured I had been sitting too long, slept funny, wore the wrong shoes, or maybe I was simply getting older.
Then it started happening more often.
The numbness lasted longer. One foot sometimes felt colder than the other. I started noticing that my legs felt tired or heavy after walking, and eventually I had to admit that this did not feel normal anymore. That was when the annoying little symptom I had been ignoring started to scare me.
Numbness and tingling in the feet and legs can have many causes, including nerve problems, diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, spinal conditions, and other health issues. But persistent numbness can also be associated with poor circulation and vascular disease. One condition doctors may evaluate for is Peripheral Artery Disease, or PAD, which occurs when narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the legs and feet.
PAD does not always begin with dramatic symptoms. Some people notice cramping or pain when walking that improves with rest. Others experience numbness, tingling, weakness, cold feet or toes, skin discoloration, or wounds that seem unusually slow to heal.
That is exactly why it can be so easy to ignore.
We are very good at creating explanations for things our bodies keep trying to tell us. But when numbness becomes persistent, starts worsening, affects one leg or foot differently than the other, or appears alongside changes in temperature, skin color, walking tolerance, or healing, it deserves a closer look.
A vascular evaluation can help determine whether reduced blood flow is contributing to those symptoms. At West Florida Vascular & Vein, specialists evaluate circulation problems and vascular conditions using diagnostic testing designed to identify what may be happening beneath the surface.
The important part is not assuming every numb foot means something serious. It is recognizing when your body has been repeating the same message long enough that it is time to listen.
If the numbness, tingling, coldness, or discomfort in your legs or feet keeps coming back, do not wait until it becomes frightening enough to finally make the call. 727-712-3233 – West Florida Vascular & Vein can help you find out whether your circulation may be part of the problem and what your next steps should be.
