Vein Disease Is Progressive. The Time to Treat Is NOW.
It starts innocently enough. Maybe you notice a few varicose veins behind your knee. Your ankles swell after a long day. Your legs feel heavy, tired, achy, or itchy by evening. Because the symptoms come and go, it is easy to tell yourself you will deal with them later.
The problem is that venous disease can progress over time.
Chronic venous insufficiency develops when the valves inside the veins do not function properly, allowing blood to pool in the legs instead of moving efficiently back toward the heart. Early symptoms may include aching, heaviness, swelling, leg cramps, or visible varicose veins. As venous disease becomes more advanced, some patients can develop skin discoloration, inflammation, tissue changes, or difficult-to-heal leg ulcers.
That does not mean every spider vein or swollen ankle is destined to become a serious vascular problem. But it does mean persistent changes in your legs should not automatically be dismissed as a cosmetic issue or simply part of getting older.
One advantage of being evaluated earlier is finding out exactly what is happening beneath the surface. A vascular specialist can review your symptoms and medical history, examine your legs, and when appropriate use a duplex ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and the function of the veins.
Treatment also does not necessarily mean traditional vein surgery. Depending on the diagnosis and severity of the condition, modern vein care may include minimally invasive options. West Florida Vascular & Vein offers treatments including sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy, endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), and the Venefit procedure, with treatment selected according to the individual patient and underlying vascular problem.
The key is knowing what you are treating.
Visible veins may be what first get your attention, but symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, aching, discoloration, cramping, or skin changes can provide clues that something deeper may be happening. Early evaluation and management can help reduce symptoms and may help prevent complications associated with chronic venous insufficiency.
