Why Are My Feet Cold, Numb, or Tingling?

Do your feet always seem cold, even when everyone else is comfortable? Maybe you’ve noticed numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” sensation that won’t go away. While these symptoms are sometimes temporary, they can also be early warning signs of a circulation problem that shouldn’t be ignored.

One of the most common vascular causes is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), a condition that occurs when plaque builds up inside the arteries and reduces blood flow to your legs and feet. As circulation decreases, your feet may not receive the oxygen and nutrients they need, leading to coldness, numbness, tingling, pain, or slow-healing wounds.

When Is It More Than Just Cold Feet?

Everyone experiences cold feet from time to time, especially in cooler weather. However, persistent symptoms deserve medical attention, particularly if you notice:

  • Feet that are consistently cold to the touch
  • Tingling or “pins and needles”
  • Numbness that doesn’t improve
  • Pain or cramping in your calves while walking
  • Changes in skin color
  • Slow-healing cuts or sores on your feet or toes
  • Weak or absent pulses in your feet

These symptoms may indicate reduced circulation and should be evaluated by a vascular specialist.

Could It Be Something Else?

Not every case of numb or tingling feet is caused by poor circulation. Diabetes, nerve disorders (neuropathy), vitamin deficiencies, spinal problems, and other medical conditions can produce similar symptoms. That’s why a proper evaluation is so important.

At West Florida Vascular & Vein, our specialists perform comprehensive vascular evaluations to determine whether your symptoms are related to blocked arteries or another circulatory condition.

Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs

PAD often develops gradually, and many people dismiss the early symptoms as simply “getting older.” Unfortunately, untreated PAD can continue to worsen, increasing the risk of non-healing wounds, infections, and even limb-threatening complications. It is also associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke because the same plaque buildup affecting your legs may also be present in other arteries throughout your body.
