Understanding Varicose Veins: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Varicose veins are a common condition, affecting millions of people. While often considered a cosmetic issue, these enlarged, twisted veins can also be a sign of underlying venous insufficiency and may cause discomfort. Understanding the basics of varicose veins is the first step toward better vascular health and finding effective relief.
What Causes Varicose Veins?
Your arteries carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body, and your veins return that blood to the heart. To do this, veins in your legs must work against gravity. Tiny, one-way valves inside your veins open to let blood flow toward the heart and then close to stop it from flowing backward.
When these valves weaken or become damaged, blood can pool in the veins. This pressure causes them to stretch, swell, and twist, leading to the formation of varicose veins. Factors that can increase your risk include age, genetics, pregnancy, obesity, and standing or sitting for long periods.
Recognizing the Symptoms
The most recognizable sign of varicose veins is the appearance of dark purple or blue, bulging veins, often on the legs. However, the symptoms are not just cosmetic. Many people experience physical discomfort, including:
- An achy or heavy feeling in the legs
- Burning, throbbing, or muscle cramping
- Swelling in the lower legs
- Itching around one or more of your veins
If left untreated, varicose veins can sometimes lead to more serious problems like skin ulcers, blood clots, or bleeding.
Modern Vein Treatment Options
Fortunately, advancements in vein treatment have made managing varicose veins safer and more effective than ever. After a thorough diagnosis to assess your vascular health, we can determine the best course of action. Options range from conservative approaches like compression stockings and lifestyle changes to minimally invasive procedures.
These modern treatments are designed to close off or remove the problematic vein, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. Most procedures are performed in-office with minimal downtime, allowing you to return to your daily activities quickly.
