Why Do My Legs Hurt When I Walk?
Leg pain when walking is easy to brush off
Maybe you blame your shoes, your age, the Florida heat, or being out of shape. But if your legs ache, cramp, burn, feel heavy, or get tired when you walk, especially if the pain improves when you rest, your body may be trying to tell you something important.
One common vascular cause of leg pain while walking is peripheral artery disease, also called PAD. PAD happens when plaque builds up inside the arteries, narrowing them and reducing blood flow to the legs and feet. When you walk, your leg muscles need more oxygen-rich blood. If blocked or narrowed arteries cannot deliver enough blood, the result can be pain, cramping, weakness, or heaviness. West Florida Vascular & Vein explains that this type of walking-related leg pain is often called claudication and may improve after a few minutes of rest.
This is not something to ignore or “push through”
Leg pain with walking can be a warning sign of a circulation problem. PAD may also be connected to broader cardiovascular risks, including heart attack and stroke. In more advanced cases, reduced blood flow can contribute to non-healing wounds, ulcers, mobility problems, and serious limb complications.
Other symptoms may include numbness, weakness, coldness in the lower leg or foot, color changes in the skin, slow-healing sores, or reduced hair growth on the feet and legs. Risk factors can include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, kidney disease, and a more sedentary lifestyle.
The good news is that answers are available
West Florida Vascular & Vein provides evaluation and treatment for vascular and vein conditions throughout the greater Tampa and West Florida area. Their team, led by Board Certified Vascular Surgeon Dr. Mark Zuzga, offers outpatient vascular and vein care for concerns such as leg pain, swelling, ulcers, discoloration, spider veins, varicose veins, and artery disease.
A vascular evaluation may include a physical exam, a review of your symptoms and risk factors, and noninvasive testing to check circulation. One common test is an ankle-brachial index, or ABI, which compares blood pressure in the ankle and arm. Vascular ultrasound may also be used to look more closely at blood flow in the legs.
Treatment depends on what is causing your symptoms. For some patients, lifestyle changes, walking programs, medications, and managing cholesterol, blood pressure, or diabetes may help. For others, minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, or atherectomy may be recommended to help restore blood flow.
